IHS are the first three letters of the name of the Lord - in Anglicized Greek. Th "H" makes the "I" into a long "ee" sound. The "S" is Anglicized Sigma. In the 1611 King James the name is spelt as IESOVS and pronounced ee-shoe. But in the older Greek bibles it is IHSOU (S), same pronunciation. In the oldest Greek Bibles the name is never spelt and is shown only as "IC" with a bar over the top. The Lord's Aramaic name is pronounced "ee-shoe." Hope this doesn't offend any Leicaphiles. I am also a theologian and believe that art is a gift of God. And so is photography. And also Leica.
