According to some, “the word 'grotto’ comes from the Greek word kruptos, meaning hidden. It was believed that a union between the Sky God and the Earth Mother created the world, pietas and furor. Therefore being in touch with the Earth Mother was best achieved in caves with a spring and a nymph of that spring, who was also a divine inspiration. Such places grew into shrines.
