Yes I think it would be by chance that it landed there. They flew out of Mildenhall in the UK typically and flew all over the continent during the Cold War but weren't really set up to be based in Germany. The plane used a special fuel mix that wouldn't normally be available at every base and the security just to house the plane would have to be planned for typically so I'm guessing you're right, they probably had a technical problem that forced them to land there.
I've seen this secret black bird once flying just for one minute during landing operation late in the afternoon at Ramstein AFB/Germany! I was wondering, because officially it was not allowed that this spy airplane should land in Europe. Maybe, there was a technical problem.
Thanks aquilan! Yes I took quite a lot. Good composition is tough in both the Dulles and main museums with all the planes they have there. I have another posted here of the Enola Gay which is also housed in the hanger out near Dulles. I'll try and post more when I have time.
Great Plane..I always liked to watch reference photos of planes' details, especially this aircraft..did You take more pictures there? :) Superb quality of zeiss lenses...as always, nice composition.
