William Dunch bought the site in the 1550's and apparently began the present house soon afterwards. This room represents the Dunch's status

If you look carefully, there is a chain fireguard which could be pulled across the fire to stop embers or sparkes flying out into the room. Fires were a real hazard in medieval times and many houses burnt down this way.

Very nice in your series... (BTW in our place is the same chainfance, for the same reason. The only difference is a Roman D letter in years.)
