Yes, I think that this tendency is transcontinental. In Poland, e.g the most expensive passives of Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) are building too :) Maybe they are not made in gold but they are made in Marble and other most precious minerals. They are huge and most advanced technologically.

Built in 1928 at a cost of $21 million. There are 25,000 gold-leaf tiles. When the sun hits the tower.....watch out!
