Martim Moniz, Lisbon. An old lady I see often wandering around this area. She always has a drink with her but is always smiling. Many people here need real medical help. The health care service is becoming privatised so many people self medicate.
Portuguese goverment austerity cuts anger the people. Protest outside the Portuguese Lisbon Parliament. 13 October 2012. A fire is started, bottles and fireworks are thrown at the police by angry protesters.

Manifestation outside of the portuguese parliament 2012. People are angry about austerity measures cripplind social and economic freedoms. The austerity measures are imposed by the Troika, (IMF, European Central bank, EU). The people of Portugal (like many others) are paying for the mistakes (or careful calculations) of the central banking system.

Avenue da Liberdate, Lison Portugal. During the day the avenue host high-end retail and designer outlets, by night it is shelter for lisbons homeless. The devide between the rich and the poor becomes greater every day. While the goverment representatives have expensive meetings, luxuary apartments and banquet meals, the people of portugal are slowly being thrown to the streets.

Nelson is american english speaking with family in portugal and in america. He has been living on the streets of lisbon for 3 years now. He is a tall large man yet speaks very slowly and softly. We spoke about destiny, food, religion and goverment.

Homeless man sleeping in on a park bench in lisbon portugal. Austerity measures are hitting the people hard here in portugal. Many sick and mentally ill people are now living on the streets, with no home and no medication, many start to self medicate with alcohol and drugs.

I decided to pick my camera up again and start walking the streets, I walked about for 20 mins, I only took 4 pictures. This was the first one. I struggle each and every day with my understanding of life and purpose, when I walk with my camera I no longer have this struggle, I start to see life.
