I'm posting this reply to your comment on zeissimages website, since I was unable to figure out how to do it on zeissimages.
yes, the dog was very much alive. It was just cooling off in the May heat. There are a lot of homeless dogs (and cats, for that matter) in Istanbul. Generally people are kind to them, and feed them.
